» Your future with us
Working at the University Hospital Cologne and the Medical Faculty means helping to shape the future - the future of medicine, of patients and, of course, your own future. You benefit from 60 clinics and institutes as well as numerous other departments and facilities and more than 12,000 jobs. The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Cologne and the University Hospital Cologne assume important social tasks in research, teaching and patient care. A close network with many university and non-university partners guarantees an internationally successful science and the excellent education of our students.
» Your future in detail
Scientists from the University of Cologne, the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing, the Max Planck Institute for Metabolism Research in Cologne and from the University of Bonn have teamed up to study how mitochondria influence activity, differentiation and survival of the cell. The Collaborative Research Centre (CRC)/Sonderforschungsbereich (SFB) 1218 on Mitochondrial regulation of cellular function has been funded by the German Research Foundation
(
DFG) since July 2016. In June 2024, we are happy to announce that the CRC 1218 is entering its third phase, funded by the German Research Foundation until 2028.
The CRC 1218 is organized in seventeen scientific and five central projects. The Integrated Research Training Group (mito-RTG), a graduate programme specifically designed for the doctoral candidates and postdoctoral scientists participating in the projects of the CRC, provides them with the best possible scientific environment, guidance, mentoring and teaching.
PhD student position (f/m/x) Department of Dermatology
Activities and responsibilities
The DFG-funded Collaborative Research Centre (CRC1218) “Mitochondrial regulation of cellular function\", Department of Dermatology at the University of Cologne is seeking applications for one
PhD student position (f/m/x) to be employed under a limited-time contract of 3 years (third-party funded).
We are searching for a highly motivated and qualified scientist with research interests in the area of:
Mitochondrial function in skin inflammation and regeneration The successful candidate will join a dynamic research lab and will participate in the analysis of molecular mechanisms regulating mitochondrial function in skin injury, repair and homeostasis. In the particular project we are interested to understand
how mitochondrial structure and function controls immune cell function in skin regeneration. We offer a stimulating scientific environment (
https://sfb1218.uni-koeln.de/ (Project B10),
https://www.cecad.uni-koeln.de,
http://www.cmmc-uni-koeln.de/home/), excellent guidance and the lab has interesting national and international collaborations. Applicants will have access to cutting-edge technology and the opportunity for collaborations in an excellent scientific setting. Methods that will be used: molecular biology, microarray and bioinformatic analysis, biochemistry, cell biology and imaging, studies in gene modified mouse models. Suggested further literature: Eming et al., Science 356:1026-1030, 2017; Knipper et al., Immunity 43:803-16, 2015); Willenborg et al., Cell Metabolism 33:2398-2414, 2021; Eming et al., Cell Metabolism 33:1726-1743, 2021).
Qualification profile
Applications are invited from candidates who recently obtained their Diploma/Masters degree. The applicant should have a strong background in molecular biology and enthusiasm to study basic mechanisms of disease processes. The candidate will be actively involved in mouse work and previous experience is desirable, but not mandatory.
Please submit your application (including a detailed CV, copy of Abiturzeugnis, list of publications, two references and a brief statement of research interests) online below.
