Open 3-year PhD position at the Heinrich-Heine Universität in the area of biotechnology, synthetic biology.
The position is available at the institute for plant cell biology and biotechnology at the Heinrich-Heine University, Düsseldorf. The lab is optimally equipped in the following areas: molecuar biology, cell culture, carbohydrate analysis (GC-MS, HPLCs, MALDI-MS). The PhD candidate will be an integral part of the Mibinet consortium (https://www.sfb1535.hhu.de/mibinet) at the HHU, which allows the participation of workshops e.g. pertaining to networking with industry.

Activities and responsibilities
Project: Lichens represent a symbiosis between fungi and cyanobacteria/ algae. We have recently identified surface lectins of the lichen-fungus that bind to carbohydrate ligands of the lichen cyanobacteria that enable tight association between those two organisms. In this project the genes for the synthesis of the carbohydrate ligand should be identified to reconstruct this binding interaction in an orthologous host, yeast. This synthetic interaction will then allow the study of nutrient and signal fluxes between two organisms.
Qualification profile
The candidate must have a Master degree in biology, biochemistry, biotechnology or related areas, be interested in the topic of synthetic biology, and have experimental experiences in molecular biology and working under sterile conditions (e.g. cultured growth of fungi). Analytical experience, e.g. HPLC and/or GC/MS are optional.
