We are looking for a talented, highly motivated student that wishes to pursue a PhD project in chromatin biology. The position is in the research group of Jacqueline Mermoud which strives to understand the epigenetic basis of cell identity and how it is disrupted in disease. The laboratory is situated in one of the centers for epigenetic research in Germany, Marburg University, which combines several chromatin research labs, providing ample opportunities for idea exchange and training.

Activities and responsibilities

The laboratory dissects the molecular pathways and players that underpin the establishment of transcriptional repressed heterochromatin, characterised by DNA methylation and histone-modifications, and its maintenance through replication. Heterochromatin regulation is pivotal for genome stability, cell identity and normal development because heterochromatin restricts lineage inappropriate gene expression, ensures accurate chromosome segregation and controls the activity of transposable elements.

The aim of the DFG funded PhD student project is to elucidate the molecular mechanisms and cellular function of a chromatin remodelling enzyme that we have recently identified as a silencing factor and characterize its little-understood isoform that has been linked to pathologies.

These questions will be tackled in a number of experimental systems (e.g. mouse pluripotent stem cells, human skin cells) with biochemical, cellular, molecular and genome-wide approaches (e.g. transcriptomics, proteomics, chromatin profiling).

Qualification profile

a talented student with a passion for chromatin research
very good Masters Degree (or equivalent) with a strong background in biochemistry, cell biology or molecular biology
hands-on lab experience is essential
we are looking for enthusiastic experimentalists with a solid background in bioinformatics/ computational biology
strong motivation, scientific curiosity and commitment to scientific excellence
good knowledge of or experience with DNA methylation
