Your career at Institute of Molecular Biology

Our International PhD Programme (IPP) Mainz gives talented and enthusiastic students the opportunity to undertake PhD research at the cutting edge of modern biology. Our groups cover a broad range of expertise and include leading biochemists, geneticists, cell and developmental biologists who study the molecular mechanisms of embryonic development, ageing and disease; bioinformaticians and systems biologists who analyse high-throughput datasets and model regulatory gene networks; and applied physicists who develop ground breaking super-resolution microscopes. This range of expertise and the open and vibrant atmosphere within the Programme encourages multidisciplinary collaborations and innovative research. Moreover, a range of scientific and social events are organised to ensure high levels of exchange and collaboration between the participating groups.

The Programme is coordinated by the Institute of Molecular Biology in Mainz, Germany, and participating groups are located at the:

Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB)
Johannes Gutenberg University (JGU)
University Medical Center (UMC)
Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPI-P)

The research group of Tim Sparwasser offers the following 2 PhD projects: T-cell aging is associated with an imbalance in naïve and memory T-cell subsets, as well as an accumulation of senescent and exhausted T-cells. These changes contribute to increased vulnerability to infe...
The research group of Helle Ulrich offers the following PhD project: Our lab studies regulatory mechanisms at the interface of proteostasis and genome stability. We are particularly interested in the diverse signalling functions of the posttranslational modifier ubiquitin, whi...
The research group of Carlotta Martelli offers the following PhD project: Odorant Receptors (ORs) constitute the main family of chemosensory genes in nearly all species. Based on the canonical model of the olfactory circuit, a single OR is expressed in each Olfactory Receptor ...
The research group of Uwe Wolfrum offers the following PhD project: Human Usher syndrome (USH) is a complex disease and the most common form of inherited deaf-blindness (1). Of the four clinical types, USH1 is the most severe, characterized by congenital profound hearing and v...

The research group of René Ketting offers the following PhD project: The genomes of basically all living organisms on our planet are invaded by genetic elements called transposable elements (TEs). These TEs can be considered as parasites in our genome, although they also contr...
The research group of Sandra Schick offers the following 2 PhD projects: Genomic DNA is highly compacted into chromatin in order to fit into the nucleus of a cell. The packaging further provides a regulatory layer for DNA accessibility and therefore all DNA-dependent processes...
The research group of Roopesh Anand offers the following PhD project: The genomic integrity is extremely important for the normal cellular functions. However, cells are routinely challenged by various DNA damaging events leading to the formation of different DNA lesions. In ad...
The research group of Wolfram Ruf offers the following PhD project: Through the life of the host a finely regulated balance between quiescence and activation allows the hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) to continuously replenish all mature blood cells in homeostasis and in respon...
The research group of Johannes Mayer offers the following PhD project: Trained immunity has recently been discovered as a novel mechanism of immune cell memory in innate immune cells. Different to the adaptive immune system, innate cells do not develop into antigen-specific lo...
The research group of Johannes Mayer offers the following PhD project: Type 2 immune responses play an important role in the defense against parasites, effective wound healing and protection against toxins. Type 2 immune responses have however also been associated with detrime...
The research group of Andreas Wachter offers the following PhD project: Alternative splicing (AS) massively increases transcriptome complexity in higher eukaryotes, with critical implications in developmental processes and stress responses. Studying AS events in model systems ...
The research group of Christof Niehrs offers the following PhD project: R-loops are three-stranded nucleic acid structures comprising an RNA hybrid and a displaced single-stranded DNA (ssDNA). The exposed ssDNA makes R-loops a hotspot for DNA modifications that can impact R-lo...
The research group of Petra Beli offers the following PhD project: R-loops are secondary DNA structures consisting of an RNA-DNA hybrid and a single stranded DNA that can form behind the elongating RNA polymerase II during transcription. R-loops play regulatory roles during tr...
The research group of Dorothee Dormann offers the following PhD project: R-loops occur naturally during transcription and can have important regulatory functions, however, persistence of R-loops can have deleterious effects and result in the accumulation of DNA double-strand b...
